Asociación entre el uso de cigarrillos electrónicos y la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica

Resumen


Actualmente, los cigarrillos electrónicos se comercializan de manera de libre como un sustituto menos dañino a los cigarrillos ordinarios, sin embargo, la asociación entre el uso de estos y la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) no ha sido estudiada a fondo, la toxicidad pulmonar es la más frecuente, dado que el pulmón es el sitio principal de exposición a los aerosoles como los cigarrillos electrónicos.


La EPOC es una de las primeras causas de morbilidad y mortalidad a nivel mundial, en este documento se describe la relación que existe entre el uso de los cigarrillos y la presencia de la enfermedad entre otros factores. Estudios in vitro e in vivo en animales han demostrado que la exposición a los cigarrillos electrónicos desencadena una respuesta inflamatoria similar a la que se observa con el humo del cigarrillo convencional, provocando la aparición de enfermedades respiratorias crónicas, como el asma y la EPOC.
